THE CHALLENGE
Rethinking healthcare system: How will digital social network shape the future of personal health?
The goal is to explore and model the future healthcare ecosystem - healthcare social network (HSN) through a user-centric perspective.
THE OUTCOME
User experience design framework detailing 4 key experience drivers and 13 evaluation criteria for successful user adoption. From this, 5 potential service models were developed and tested through interactive prototypes.
Better healthcare by design
The digital health landscape is evolving at a rapid pace. As individuals, we record and share more personal health data than ever before. How can we tap onto the potential of these data to improve our health? What concerns do we have as users of future health technology?
In this project, we explored future healthcare systems (data ownership & distribution, user autonomy, stakeholders relationship) from the user perspective.
Where 1+1 =3
In 2014, I suffered from recurring eye problems. Reflecting on the experience, I realized how my initial Facebook post created a ripple effect that contributed to my eventual recovery. Encouragement and advice poured in within minutes, making me an “eye expert” and also directing me to the right resources for recovery.
Fast forward to the present, as digital health technology continues to advance, we have access to an endless stream of personal health data Collectively, these data can generate a lot of potential knowledge to advance our health. Think big data for healthcare. This was when I started thinking about the possibilities of healthcare social networks (HSNs), digital community-participatory models where individuals come together for such a purpose. The key question here is: What are user considerations and converns of such future healthcare models?

Starting with the questions

Such participatory perspective is uncharted territory but also a plausible one as users are increasingly interested to get more out of their personal health data. To get started, I conducted in-depth interviews to shape this new context.

Putting these answers together gave me a clue about the expected experience and the key drivers that can bring such a vision into reality.
Zooming in on the success factors
Dissecting the interview insights, 4 key experience drivers were evident to bring such a concept to life - Purpose, Trust, Autonomy and Connection.
From which, 13 criteria were derived to form an evaluation framework that I used to ideate and conceptualize potential operations and models of the healthcare network.
Five Possibilities
5 prototypes were built, representing a mix of user experience considerations - from open to closed system, social to personal gains, high to low social interaction.These prototypes were further evaluated through interviews to understand the level of Trust, Autonomy, Purpose and Connection in practice.
At the end of the project, a strategy for healthcare social network was developed with:
User experience priorities for successful implementation.
Service and product recommendations based on evaluated models.
Further research opportunities for future healthcare ecosystem.
